Preview – Fudoist Temple (Gates of Chaos)

Undermine their pompous authority, reject their moral standards, make anarchy and disorder your trademarks. Cause as much chaos and disruption as possible but don’t let them take you ALIVE. – Sid Vicious

Last time it was Madness, by which I mean P’an Ku goodness, and this time we get some Chaos, and by Chaos I switching to the opposite side of the fight and showing you this:

So, worshiping at the Fudoist temple gives you Cavalry. Here’s how I’m thinking this works. You denounce Shinsei, they give you a horse. It’s like Happy Meals – draw them in with the little toy, get them to stay for the heart disease (seriously, have you looked at Fudo’s Followers? They could all be extras in Super Size Me). Also, I’m betting Adrian had to go back and have Jason Juta add in those horses after the DT decided it was going to hand out Cavalry.

But Chris, you say, do you have any comments about whether this card is any good? Sure. Any intelligent ones? Well, that’s different. The first thing that comes to mind is how much the latest Ivory Edition design diary affects 3G Holdings, with its seeming preference for 2x 2G holdings starts. Really, though, 3G Holdings have been in a weird place for a while – you can’t buy them off of Border Keep, and you’re “wasting” Stronghold gold (unless you’re Lion) if you use your box to buy them. So you often have to evaluate a 3G Holding as if it costs 4G. Still, being able to dodge super-units around defenders has its advantages. Maybe the Lion Followers decks will find themselves worshiping at the Fudoist Temple most of all (big units, go first to take advantage of Cavalry), although there might be some room for Spider Sohei there as well (pay for your Weapon last turn when you buy the guy, pay for his Cavalry now, and can’t use Gaining Experience, and gives Yamazaki something to do if you run out of Weapons).

Just remember:

Chaos in the midst of chaos isn’t funny, but chaos in the midst of order is. – Steve Martin

Or, to paraphrase, attempts to undermine the social order only make for an interesting story when there’s a social order to undermine.
