Clan Tourney Success in Kotei Season 2013 #12

Only one Kotei last weekend, and not a big one, and no missing information added from previous weeks, so there isn’t a lot of movement in the figures this update (not that there’s tons of movement at this point in an environment anyway, since there’s some statistical heft to the existing 2200 data points). Speaking of the number of data points, I think that Kotei season this year is going to be at least a 25% attendance drop-off from last year. That’s not a small amount.

  1. Well, the environment is, right now, probably the most unpopular once since Lotus. I’m not surprised by the drop-off, honestly.

And it doesn’t help that two clans have combined, the same number of wins as the other Clans (Mantis and Phoenix with 22 to Crab/Crane/Dragon/Lion/Scorpion/Spider/Unicorn’s 22, or almost as many when you add Unaligned’s 4).

People saw an environment like this in the second half of Celestial, when it was Spider and Crane, and then everyone else, and folks didn’t enjoy it. Unsuprising they’re not coming back for seconds, just with the top dogs changed.

  2. I don’t think it is just the imbalance in the environment (although I agree it makes the game uninteresting at competitive level). There is also the distribution issues this year combined with the economic crisis. While it is advantageous for some, lots of people simply can’t buy so many DtP sets (me included) when the hobby’s costs are competing with more important budget issues. Last but not least, I think the game has become so unforgiving for casual players that it is difficult to have fun when several cards are simply killing each match (Rosary, Oblivious, Creating Order, etc.). So, twisted environment, no fun to play against cards and money issues are a bad combination and certainly explain the drop offs.

  3. Point. We’ve been in an economic crisis I barely think it warrants a mention when things aren’t selling as well, or events aren’t seeing as high attendance. I’ve kind of accepted it as a ‘known issue’, if you will, but you’re right in that it, along with the balance issues, are both things that contribute to the fall of attendance for Koteis..
